Have you insured your home office?
As more and more people decide to work from home, whether for themselves or for an employer, there are concerns that many of this group are under insured in the event of an accident or theft. Right across the UK we are seeing more and more offices springing up in gardens, many of which will contain valuable computing equipment not to mention information which will be vital to the smooth running of a home based operation.
It seems that many people automatically assume that there offices are covered by their general house insurance when in reality this is probably not the case. In the event of a claim it has been shown that many insurance companies have failed to payout for damage or theft to a home office because they had not been briefed about the situation.
The insurance of business property is very much different from domestic insurance as there are more knock on affects such as potential problems with clients if data is lost, contracts are late or other issues arise from damage to or theft from a business premises. If you are in this situation it is vital that you consult your insurance provider and let them know what is happening – better to pay a little extra now than find you have lost everything and will not be compensated in the future!
