Is it now acceptable to drive with no car insurance?
As the cost of road tax and insuring your car continues to rise many people are starting to ask the question – Is it now acceptable to drive with no car insurance?
While the UK government is currently pushing through massive increases in road tax, looking to penalise drivers in the name of the ‘environment’ and insurance premiums are rising faster than ever before, where will it all stop?
Research has shown that more and more people in the UK cannot afford to drive the same number of miles they did last year and many are looking to downsize their vehicles in the short term. But driving with no insurance, surely there can be no justification? Quite right, it is illegal, it is wrong and it costs the average driver at least £30 a year extra in car insurance premiums.
Official estimates claim that there are currently 2 million vehicles in the UK where the driver has no insurance, that one in every fifteen cars you come across will be driven illegally and uninsured drivers are 10 times more likely to have convictions for drink driving and 6 times more likely to be driving a vehicle which is not road worthy.
The cost to the insurance industry is running at some £500 million a year of which £350 million is funded by increasing premiums for legal UK drivers. Do not forget that if you are in a crash with a driver who is not insured you can claim off your own insurance for repairs to your own vehicle but medical expenses may not be covered. You are highly unlikely to be able to claim any compensation off the uninsured driver, many of whom will have no assets or income available.
The Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) handles claims for compensation against uninsured drivers and while it handles upwards of 36,000 claims a year, and pays out on many, you are not certain to receive any financial assistance. The fact the MIB is funded by contributions from the UK insurance industry yet again means that consumers will pay in the end as premiums rise to cover the short fall.
